How to choose your cushions

First check: whole cushion or cover only?

This is the one thing worth checking before you order. Some of our cushions come complete with the filling inside; others are covers only, meant for the pads you already have at home. Every product page says which one it is, so have a look if you want it ready to drop on the sofa the day it arrives.

What size, and how many

Most are standard sofa sizes, with a few smaller ones and a few deliberately oversized. The rule that works on a three-seater is an odd number in mixed sizes. Three cushions in two sizes look far better than four identical ones, which is what makes a living room look like a showroom instead of a home. You do not need to buy the full set.

Choosing colours the easy way

Take one colour that is already in the room — the curtain, the rug, a picture — and add one that clashes slightly. Matching the sofa exactly rarely works, and when it does the result falls flat. If your sofa is neutral, that is where a bold print or a slogan cushion earns its place. If the sofa already has colour or pattern, go for text on a plain background instead.

Slogan cushions: where they work

Cushions with a message need somewhere they can actually be read: the back of the sofa, the reading chair, the bed. Stacked on top of each other they disappear. If you are using several with text, leave a plain one in between so the eye gets a rest.

For a child's room

Different rules apply here: it has to wash easily and it must not have small loose parts. Plush cushions count twice over, working as decoration and as nap company at the same time. There are more ideas in kids' decor.

When it works as a gift

A cushion is the housewarming gift: used every day, takes up no cupboard space, and there is no size to get wrong. It also works for a birthday when you want something with presence without spending a lot. The one thing we would avoid is giving a cover on its own — unless you know what pads they have at home, go for the complete cushion.
