How to choose your moon lamp

Small or medium?

It comes down to where it is going to live. The small one is 8 cm and belongs on a bedside table: enough light to read by for a while or to leave on while someone falls asleep, without taking over a table that is already full. The medium is 15 cm and has presence — it works as a mood lamp in a living room, in the hallway or on a shelf, and it is the one people notice when they walk in. If it is a present and you are torn, the medium makes more of an impression; if it is for use every night beside the bed, the small one does the job better.

What the light is like

It lights up in two tones: a warm orange, like an August moon, and a white. The white also comes in two intensities, bright and medium. You change it with a touch-sensitive button, with no switches or trailing cables, which is a large part of why it works so well on a bedside table in the dark.

As a night light

One of its best uses and not the most obvious one. In a child's room, a warm low light left on all night settles things without keeping anyone awake, and an actual moon is a far easier sell than a generic plug-in nightlight. If you are putting a whole room together, kids' decor has the rest.

It still works switched off

That is the difference between a lamp and an object: the surface is a 3D-printed relief map of the Moon, so switched off it reads as an ornament rather than an appliance waiting to be turned on.
