Natural coir: why it is still the material

Coconut fibre has been the doormat material for a century for one very simple reason: it scrapes. Its stiff texture pulls dirt off the sole far better than a soft textile, it absorbs the damp on rainy days and it doesn't flatten with daily use. The non-slip PVC backing does the rest of the job, which is keeping the mat exactly where you put it even with half a family coming and going.

Measure first (it takes 30 seconds)

Our usual size is 60 x 40 cm, which fits most flat doors. Before deciding, check two things: the free width of the landing or porch, and above all the gap under the door when it opens, because an outward-opening door with a tight clearance will catch on the mat. Inside or outside?

A covered entrance is ideal: hallway, landing, porch or doorway. That is where a coir mat performs best and lasts for years. If yours is going to sit fully exposed to August sun and November rain, expect the colours to fade sooner; in that case place it as sheltered as you can and shake it out often.

Keeping it like new

Shake it upside down once a week or run the vacuum over it, and use a dry brush for a specific stain. The golden rule is never to soak it or put it in the washing machine: coir loses its shape and colour with water. If it has got wet in the rain, stand it upright in the shade to dry before putting it back.
